Tioga County was formed on March 26, 1804 from parts of Lycoming County. The name, derived from an Native American word meaning "the forks of a stream", honors the Tioga River.
Wellsboro, the county seat, lies just 12 miles east of the Pennsylvania Grand Canyon, one of state’s most spectacular natural attractions. While you’re visiting the Canyon, be sure to enjoy the charming and historic appeal reflected by the town’s Victorian architecture, tree-lined streets, and old fashioned gas lights.
With seven lakes and thousands of acres of state forest land throughout the county, there is always room for campers, hikers, bikers, and fishers to spread out and enjoy the peaceful serenity of nature.
